What are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files downloaded to your computer when you access a website, and are stored on your computer’s hard-drive. The cookie is then read by the site’s web pages as you navigate them, allowing the site to recognise your browser and so “remember” who you are.
Our website sets three kinds of cookies, session cookies, persistent cookies and tracking cookies.
What Cookies do we use?
Session Cookies
Session cookies are temporary identifiers that allow our site to recognise your browser as you navigate from page to page. This is required in order for us to provide a secure and convenient shopping environment for you, by ensuring that your transactions and personal information are only accessible by you. Session cookies are required to allow you to access your account, add books to your shopping cart, place orders, view your previous orders, and to set personal preferences.
Our session cookies do not store any information that could be used to access your account, such as your account password. Session cookies are set to expire when your browser closes. Please see below for the list of cookies that we set to see which cookies are session cookies and what they do.
Persistent Cookies
Persistent cookies are cookies that are set to expire after a fixed amount of time, and so may remain stored on your browser after you have closed it or left our site. Persistent cookies set by our site are set to expire from anything between one day and one year after they are set, and are primarily used to store information about your preferences so that our site can “remember” them when you visit us again. They do not store any personal identifying data.
Please see below for the list of cookies that we set to see what they do and when they expire.
Tracking Cookies
Our website also sets Google Analytics tracking cookies to monitor our site traffic. These cookies record information relating to visits to our site, including the pages viewed, how long they were viewed for, and how the visitor arrived at our site. This information is not managed by us directly but is processed on Google’s servers in the United States. Google then makes this data available to us in a form which does not identify individual visitors but which allows us to analyse the performance of our website and to make improvements.
These tracking cookies do not record personal information, although they do collect IP addresses so that Google can analyse activity by geographical area. However, these IP addresses are “anonymized”, which means that your full IP address is not recorded. Furthermore, IP addresses are not associated with any other data held by Google in such a way that would allow the identification of individual visitors.
If you are concerned about tracking cookies on your computer, Google provides a free add-on for your browser that allows you to opt-out of Google Analytics cookies. It can be downloaded here.
Further information for site visitors is provided in Google’s Policy for Data Privacy and Security.
